EMDR Therapy

EMDR is an evidence-based, effective method of psychotherapy designed to resolve the symptoms and emotional distress resulting from disturbing life experiences/unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain.

The brain can heal from psychological trauma just as the physical body can heal from an injury. However, the brain's information processing system can get stuck due to the impacts of a distressing life event, causing emotional suffering.

Although the flight, fight, and freeze instincts evolved for survival, the body is not meant to live in these states. Daily stressors that cause this response can leave you feeling overwhelmed or frozen, impacting your decision-making skills and reactions.

EMDR processing mimics that of REM sleep and helps the brain process memories to allow for normal healing to resume. Past experiences become updated with present information. The experience is still remembered but the emotional response from the original event is resolved. The processing of events can occur without needing to talk about all the details.

We work together! Associated thoughts, feelings, images from the event will become organized. An agreed upon element is brought into focus (briefly) while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movement or alternating tapping) and working through the processing. Processing is tailored to best suit you. You will learn skills that can be used inside, and out of, sessions to help regulation.
